The National Polluntant Discharge Elimination System

The National Polluntant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) is new federal storm water management regulation that
requires municipalities in 'urban areas' across Pennsylvania to apply for a permit to dicharge storm water from our
municipal storm water system. This act disallows any surface water other than rain from being dischaged into a storm
sewer. This would include basement water, car washing water, and any oil or other foreign substances. These are now
called illegal activities and could lead to fines. We are attempting to educate the public on what they can do. This
will help improve our water quality. You can learn more about this at www.epa.gov/nps and www.dep.state.pa.us
